“Is my Uber cab coming?”
“Mom, did you get a message on the app saying the name of your driver and what kind of car?”
“No”
“Then no Uber is coming Mom.”
When we finally got UBER working we were waiting just a few minutes, But we were getting antsy for sure. Especially when I got a text from Martha that she got herself a ride on the plane ride over and was headed for the Troubadour. As we were still waiting for a cab she texted that she was there already. She actually beat me to the show even flying in to LAX on a Saturday night.
But we did arrive in time to see them set the stage for Insects vs Robots. I had a prime spot on the rail of stage left. I loved every song that they played and danced like a gypsy in my almost bare feet. Erica turned me on to a brilliant idea to wear these ballet slippers socks we bought at Walgreens. I can’t tell you how my feet are already permanently stained with some of the worst floor yuck of the best music venues. I learn something new on every trip and certainly this is one thing I have learned to have a better show experience. I did get the look from a flock of girls that were standing outside the Troubadour when I went outside for a smoke with Erica in between shows in the designated smoking area. But Erica vouched for me the genius of the sock setup.
Outside in the smoking area we quickly made friends with everyone on the sidewalk. Erica met some girls that were actually in the same industry, they run a magazine I think, they were all very nice and we talked for some time sharing the best of nor cal with anyone who came over to smoke a cigarette in the smoking section. A performer named Howard who had a whole shtick about his name that went something like How Hard…but he was actually pretty cool. Another guy named Marcus said he was a producer, he was Hollywood Beautiful. Marcus told me as we were all smoking that he left his stash in the UBER cab he rode over in so I reached in my new Dollar store pursey and gave him one of the joints I had in there to smoke for later. He didn’t know what to say at first, I could tell he wasn’t expecting it, he made a weak gesture to be polite but quickly accepted once he saw I was gifting him something that was meant to be shared. I told him, think how your forgotten stash probably made someone else’s night? He just smiled, not sure it was a good thing. We talked for a while before some other girl cut in, she was an actress and thought the fact he was a producer was just fascinating. I excused myself so she could make her move and talked some more with Howard, who by the way would love it if you LIKED his facebook page. Howard’s Page. I saw Naoko McCormick, I apparently missed her at Seal Beach, I went over to say hello. She introduced me to her friends, They were just going in so I followed them all inside the club. I was standing in my spot next to my girl Martha at the first note of HOW LONG. I was so happy that Martha was able to come, even if it was just flying in and out, I know she was making the effort for me as much as she wanted to see the band it was actually not the best timing for a getaway. Her daughter Ashley joined us for the show. She is a stylist in town so she doesn’t get to see Martha much. I guess our friends and family are beginning to track us down at Willie or Lukas Nelson shows.
I loved being in LA. I met so many great people at that show. I saw Mikey and that was nice too, he lives down south now so we don’t see him as much. I saw John Herring at the end of the show and we briefly talked but he was front and center filming with an official press pass for the entire show. I included some of his footage down below with the set list so you could experience most of the show thanks to John’s dedicated footage.
I enjoyed my usual spot with Martha at my side. Corey played around with us and made faces at us when we took too many pictures of him. Towards the middle of the set Naoko came up and danced a little with us and then she brought up Corey a drink and they kissed it was very sweet and would have been an adorable picture if there had been any real photographers around to grab that shot.
If anyone asked me, which they don’t…I would say the set was missing some of the songs that I feel really highlight each band member for their incredible musicianship. Toppers is one that actually features each band member in a strong solo that would raise the dead to dance…More Corey is not a bad thing right? Anthony and Tato kill an old lady with their dueling drums on that song and Lukas delivers both the haunting riffs and his vocals, Toppers is a party on stage. Ever hear the money interlude played the same? I love that song, I think it a POTR signature. I did not feel there was one song that I got to really dance with Corey, for a bit we danced on LA Woman. More BASS…never enough percussion and let the animal behind the drums loose. That said it was a great show and I even got some decent pictures sitting on the stage with Martha’s camera which was great for my blog but I understand its broken now and she cant take anymore pictures….is my UBER cab coming?
